Central Heating Help And Advice:
Re-Pressurizing a central heating system?

Is there air in the system?

How To Re-Pressurize a Central Heating System:

It is essential in any central heating system, that if any air gets into the system it must be ‘bled’ from the radiators. Air in the system can be identified by:

  • Cold radiators
  • Noise from the boiler, pump or system

The first thing you must do is find out if you have a pressurized central heating system. Conventional systems and all combi boilers are pressurized. A pressurized system can usually be identified if you have a pressure gauge on the front or bottom of the boiler. This pressure gauge should normally read between 0.8 and 1.5 bar before the system has warmed up. You should top up the pressure as required, if it drops below the recommended amount.

Topping up the pressure can be done by adding water from the cold water main. On the system will be a device called a filling loop. If you open up the valve on the filling loop until it reads the correct pressure and then bleed the radiators as stated below.

If you are in any doubt, you should always contact a qualified installer.

If you don’t have a combi boiler and have a feed and expansion tank, you will only need to bleed the radiators as stated below.

How To Bleed a Radiator:

All you will need a bleed key and an absorbent cloth.

Always make sure your heating is off and the radiators are cold.

Work from the lowest radiator on your system and work your way up to the top.
Hold your cloth underneath the radiator valve and slowly open up the valve with the bleed key. You should keep the valve open until water starts to leak out. Once water starts to leak out you should tighten up the valve.

Now check your pressure gauge, if it is reading the correct amount then that is all you have to do. Just make sure you keep checking the pressure gauge on regular occasions. If the pressure changes, just repeat the steps above.
